AVID Binders

2019-2020 (Grades 6-8)

We are excited to announce that for the 2019-2020 school year, Horizon Middle School will be implementing the AVID Binder system in grades 6-8. The consistent use of binders has proven to develop learners who can self-direct, self-evaluate, self-monitor, and self-advocate.

ALL students in grades 6 through 8, will be REQUIRED to maintain their school binders following the AVID Binder model.

What is the AVID Binder?

The AVID Binder is a system for keeping essential school materials and class assignments organized into one binder. A proper AVID School-wide Binder contains all the materials in the “Required Binder Contents” section of the AVID Binder Checklist. All items must be kept in the order outlined in “How to Organize Your AVID Binder.”Items on the “Suggested” list, along with any additional items specified by individual teachers, may be added to your Back-2-School Shopping List.

How Can I Support my Child at Home?

Communicate with your child and check your child’s backpack and AVID School-wide Binder regularly. All papers should be placed in binder rings in the proper class section. Remove unnecessary papers. Ensure all required materials are present.

Check your child’s Student Planner daily. Sign your child’s planner every time you review it.

AVID Organizational Binder Checklist
This year Horizon students will be organizing their classwork and  supplies according to AVID Organizational Binder Requirements.  All  homework, class work, reference sheets, notes, etc. will be kept in the  AVID School-wide Organization Binder.

The AVID Binder is a critical component of the AVID system.  The binder helps students as an organizational tool. We have found  that organized students are successful students. During a Binder Check, students are assessed on their note-taking in their classes, as well as  maintaining an organized binder of materials that are dated and kept in  chronological order. It is the expectation that students have an  organized binder at all times and the binder can be assessed at any point.

AVID Binder checks will be conducted once per week in predetermined classes on a rotational basis. For example, the first week of each month the binders may be checked in Science, the second week in Math, the third week in Language Arts, and fourth week in Social Studies. Teachers leading the AVID Binder checks will be looking for “Required Items” and overall organization.
